Capturing Creativity: Alum Rachel Quinn’s Journey of Career and Cultural Exploration
For many, the opportunity to live and work abroad represents more than just a career move– it’s a chance for personal growth, cultural immersion, and discovering new perspectives. Rachel Quinn’s journey from Ireland to California under the J-1 visa program epitomizes this experience, blending professional aspirations with a thirst for adventure.
Rachel currently works as a Design Manager for a global software company headquartered in Austin, Texas, though she is based back home in Ireland. With a background in multimedia studies, her career path has been shaped by diverse experiences, namely her J-1 year in California where she worked at a video production company. Originally working as a production assistant and later as a production coordinator, Rachel recalls the excitement of working on film sets across the Bay Area. Despite enjoying the job, she realized her passion for a more design-focused role that eventually led her to her current position, which she describes as “more the doing than the planning”.
Choosing to move to California was driven by both professional aspirations and a desire to live somewhere new. Rachel notes that the J-1 visa was perfect for her because she wanted to travel as much as possible, but having a career was still very important to her. It was the perfect mix of both. Living initially with a friend’s family provided a supportive base for Rachel, which she later complemented by living independently in the heart of San Francisco. Actively participating in the local community was crucial as she established roots in her new environment. Rachel attended meetups, volunteered at film festivals, and went to every networking event she could, cultivating lasting friendships and professional connections that endure to this day.
Her time in California was not just about work though; it was a continuous adventure of exploring new neighborhoods, meeting diverse people, and immersing herself in American culture. From living in an Irish-run hostel to navigating team-based office dynamics in Berkeley, Rachel embraced every opportunity to learn and grow professionally. During her time on the J-1 visa, Rachel seized the opportunity to travel, from road trips along the West Coast to visiting iconic destinations like Yosemite and Los Angeles. Celebrating holidays with newfound friends added to the richness of her experience. Reflecting on the cultural exchange aspect of the J-1 visa, Rachel remarked that it is “good to throw yourself in a different situation”. While acknowledging that Ireland and the US share similarities, she emphasized the growth that comes from stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Before her J-1 year, Rachel relied on family and friends and was hesitant to do things on her own. However, living abroad independently taught her how to spend time on her own and embrace the uncertainty, despite its inherent challenges.
Returning to Ireland marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Rachel brought back not only this renewed sense of independence and confidence but also a clearer vision of her career goals. Though it was difficult to leave her life in California, Rachel was excited to return home and see what was next. Her journey serves as inspiration for those considering the J-1 visa, showcasing how embracing adventure and seizing opportunities can profoundly impact one’s life.
