Seize The Opportunity: Martin Cullen’s New York J-1 Experience

Martin Cullen made the decision to participate in the J-1 Irish Work and Travel Visa through Rian because several of his friends had done it before, and he saw it as a unique opportunity that he could not miss out on. He found the application process manageable, though it was initially challenging to find potential employers. Once he secured contacts, he found that the process went smoothly.

Martin shared that he thoroughly enjoyed the work environment at Reidy Contracting Group, noting a different culture where everyone was friendly and work-driven. He learned new skills and techniques throughout his time as an Estimator that he believes will benefit his career, and found that the assistance provided by the team at Rian was very helpful, especially when it came to sending out quick and efficient responses to his questions.

During his time on the visa, Martin enjoyed weekend trips to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, Nashville, Boston, and upstate New York for Labor Day weekend. He also had the opportunity to hurl with a club in New York and even got to return home with the team after Christmas. He played softball with his company and attended various American sports events, which added to his rich experience in the U.S.

One of the highlights of his experience was the vibrant social life and cultural exchange. Martin made numerous connections with folks from a variety of different backgrounds, which broadened his perspective and allowed him to develop a network throughout his time in the city. He found that the cultural differences, particularly the work culture, were enlightening and helped him grow both personally and professionally.

He encourages others to seize the opportunity if they are considering the J-1 program. He believes it is an invaluable experience that can open doors to numerous opportunities and provide a deeper understanding of different cultures and work environments. As far as settling in New York City went, Martin shared that he was fortunate to stay with his girlfriend’s family until he got on his feet, but noted that finding accommodation in NYC can be very difficult and occasionally requires a lot of luck. He emphasized the importance of networking and reaching out to connections for support in finding housing and navigating the city.

Looking ahead, Martin plans to return home for the summer and then either arrange another visa to return to the U.S. or venture on to Australia for more work and travel experience. He is excited about the future and the possibilities that lie ahead, confident that the skills and experiences he has gained through the J-1 program will serve him well in his career and personal life.
