Working in Science Abroad: Aoife Dillane’s J-1 Perspective

For Aoife Dillane, applying for the J-1 visa and making the eventual move to New York City was a last-minute choice, but one she’s incredibly glad she made. She credits Rian for the quick application and visa process. Without that, she might not have had this incredible opportunity.

Fortunately, Aoife has family in New Jersey who hosted her while she searched for a job. Once she landed a position in a lab on the Upper East Side, she relocated to Queens. While a 30 minute walk to work might not appeal to everyone, for Aoife, the daily stroll past iconic landmarks was a highlight she never took for granted.

Working at Cornell University, she specialized in growing heart cells in the lab she was working in-a unique opportunity she never thought possible in Ireland. “It was wild to me that I was actually using my degree,” she recalled. Having previously worked in a pharmaceutical company in Ireland, she found her work in New York both fulfilling and inspiring.

Life in New York City was fast-paced. From walking through Central Park on lunch breaks to strolling along the East River in Astoria, she cherished every moment of her year in the city. Yet, the hustle extended beyond her work life. “Even just going to the laundromat was a thing,” she laughed, acknowledging the complexities that come with life in a big city. “If you’re looking for a sign to move to New York, it’s not that hard to find one”, she said. Networking was crucial to her success, from attending Irish events to messaging potential employers directly on LinkedIn. For those pursuing science careers on their J-1,  Aoife advises that “having an idea of what the lab does and how you can relate that back to what you studied in college is key”.

Aoife’s J-1 journey was not confined to New York. She spent a month in San Francisco working for a food startup–a role Rian helped her secure as her job search period was quickly coming to an end. Though she enjoyed her time on the West Coast, she ultimately returned to New York, finding a position that she found more rewarding and beneficial for her resume. During her time in San Francisco, Aoife visited family and even attended the Super Bowl in Las Vegas with her 92 year old grandmother. Back on the East Coast, she continued her travels, exploring Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Nashville.

Reflecting on her year, Aoife emphasized the importance of preparation. “I wish I had done a bit more research before going over for the job hunt” she admitted. The process was challenging, often feeling like a full-time job itself but the effort certainly paid off. “The Irish are very modest,” she noted, but in New York, she learned the importance of self-promotion. Her advice to future J-1s? “Throw yourself into everything. You get what you give. Attend networking events alone; you might meet someone to go with next time. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people–even those you’ve only met once or twice”.

Aoife’s J-1 experience was not just about professional growth but personal as well. “I’m shocked how independent I became,” she shared. From navigating the subway to finding community in Astoria’s vibrant Irish scene, the experience changed her perspective. She described a full circle moment comparing her first and last walks down Fifth Avenue–initially overwhelming, but by the end, she no longer needed Google Maps, which felt surreal. “So much has changed in the year I had been here” Aoife reflects.

Aoife credits her time in the States for making her resume stand out and giving her confidence for future opportunities. As she makes her return to Ireland, she is looking forward to enjoying time at home and applying the skills she’s gained. “This next job hunt is going to be a breeze” she laughs. For anyone considering a J-1 visa, Aoife’s message is clear: “It’s such a great opportunity. Kind of once in a lifetime. If you’re thinking about it, just go for it”. With the right mindset and support, the move can lead to amazing personal and professional growth.
